Bowstrings

'As unto the bow the cord is,
So unto the man the woman is;
           Though she bends him, she obeys him,
                  Though she draws him, yet she follows,
     Useless each without the other.'
                                                        Longfellow, Hiawatha

The String is of great importance to the performance of any bow. In keeping with my insistence using truly traditional tools, methods and materials, I offer two types of strings, both made of finest Linen thread, served with Silk: the double looped endless and the plaited loop, which is sometimes (erroneously) called a "Flemish" string. Both types are found in antiquity.

I supply the Flatbow and Longbow with the single plaited loop string. With this string, the plaited loop slips over the upper nock while the other end is fastened to the lower nock with a Bowyer's knot. Recurve bows are supplied with a double loop string.

Linen strings require much care and attention, and are comparatively short lived. They must be waxed and inspected carefully for wear before each shooting session. At the first sign of any fraying or wear, the string must be replaced. Should the string break when an arrow is shot, the bow, with nothing to stop the forward thrust of the limbs, will most likely break too. As a concession to convenience and safety, I also make strings of Dacron, a synthetic fiber, for those who request this material. Impervious to all the Elements excepting Fire, a Dacron string will last many seasons. Your string will not have a nocking point on it; this is something you must add, fitting it to your style of shooting.
